Although it is just 5% of UK postcodes the service delivers to which have been affected, many areas in the South West have been impacted by the delays. It is believed a backlog of deliveries has accrued due to industrial action held by postal workers on eight dates so far, including yesterday (December 15) with two more scheduled for December 23 and Christmas Eve.

The Communication Workers Union states that the walkouts have come after a long-running dispute on jobs, wages, and working conditions. A spokesperson for DPD confirmed the strikes mean one and two-day delays for large portions of Bristol and its surrounding areas.

They told Bristol World: “We are still delivering parcels the next-day to the vast majority of UK postcodes and will continue to do so in the run-up to Christmas. However, we are experiencing some short delays to our next-day delivery service in a small number of locations. This is a result of the industrial action at the Royal Mail, which has had a huge knock-on effect across the entire industry. In the specific impacted postcode areas, this can mean a 24 to 48-hour delay.

“While the underlying issues here are outside of our control, we understand that any delays at this time of year are regrettable, and our team is doing everything possible to minimise the impact on next-day deliveries.”
