The Bristol area has seen a proliferation of cool neighbourhood micropubs popping up in recent years.

The likes of The Lyons Den in Kingswood, The Wooden Walls in Staple Hill and Snuffy Jack’s in Fishponds and have all been warmly welcomed by locals, especially those with a taste for real ale or craft beer.

New opening Bruhaha, which opened on the Totterdown side of the Wells Road this week, is slightly different in that it is also a brewpub and serves predominantly its own beers, as well as a couple from guest breweries.

It’s a collaboration between brewer Steve England, Dave Partridge and Simone Dougall, who also works at Windmill Hill City Farm, which is where the microbrewery was previously based and ran a pop-up bar for a couple of years.

The Bruhaha team say the new bar on Wells Road, which occupies the space that was the Eat Your Greens cafe, is a brewpub but also a ‘social space’ and hospitality venue.

The brewery tries to be as sustainable as possible and brews in small batches, which means the choice for customers will rotate quickly.

Brewer Dave was a computer programmer in a previous life, making beer at home initially as a hobby which has now become his main job.

There were six Bruhaha beers and lagers on draught in the opening week. These included the Safe European hazy lager (4%), Elder Blonde elderflower saison beer (5.8%) and Onkel Festbier German dark lager (5.6%).

As well as their own beers, there were a couple of guests from Bristol’s very own Good Chemistry Brewing, Bristol-made cider from Branch and gins from the Bristol Distilling Co. They even serve the award-winning Dunleavy rosé wine, which is made from grapes grown in Bristol.

With its wooden bench seating, retro metal-framed wooden chairs, industrial metal lights and vintage posters from German art school Bauhaus, the two-room bar is pretty on-trend and a comfortable space.

I went for a pint of the Blues Explosion Moon (4.2%), a hazy ‘wit bier’ with a refreshing citrus edge to it. The beer was excellent, the space is convivial and I want them to succeed, but I do think the prices could be tweaked a little.

All beers are £6 a pint, which is not cheap, and such prices might put off a few drinkers still grappling with the cost of living crisis.

I also don’t quite understand how a pint of alcohol-free pale ale (0.5% abv) can cost £6.50 when it’s made within walking distance of the bar.

With prices that ambitious for alcohol-free beer, it’s definitely enough to turn a man to drink, although with no beer under £6 a pint and cider £6.50, that drink might not necessarily be ordered at Bruhaha when there are pubs a short stroll away charging considerably less for a pint.

Bruhaha is open on Thursdays and Fridays 5pm-10.30pm and Saturdays 12pm-10.30pm.
