With the new year underway, many parents will be starting to look forward to receiving confirmation as to whether or not their youngsters have secured places at their first-choice secondary schools.

Offers of school places for applications sent on time will begin to arrive on March 1 before pupils make the move to ‘big’ school in September. With this in mind, we’ve put together a list of the highest-rated secondary schools in the Bristol area, according to Ofsted.

Ofsted’s rating system is made up of four rankings, ‘Outstanding’ is the top rating a school can receive, ‘good’ is second, ‘requires improvement’ is the third and ‘inadequate’ is the worst.

Below are the 13 schools currently rated as ‘Outstanding’ or ‘Good’ by the education watchdog to help you make the best choice.

Bristol Metropolitan Academy was most recently inspected on March 22, 2022. Ofsted maintained that it operated at a Good level and, in its report, determined that ‘ Leaders provide tailored careers guidance which helps pupils to decide their next steps. Pupils understand what they need to achieve to access further education, apprenticeships and work.'

Bristol Metropolitan Academy was most recently inspected on March 22, 2022. Ofsted maintained that it operated at a Good level and, in its report, determined that ‘ Leaders provide tailored careers guidance which helps pupils to decide their next steps. Pupils understand what they need to achieve to access further education, apprenticeships and work.'

This Hengrove school secured its Good rating during an inspection in 2013. A follow-up short inspection was made in 2017 which concluded John Williams continued to be good. The report stated: ‘The leadership team has maintained the good quality of education in the school since the last inspection.'

6. Oasis Academy John Williams - Good

Ofsted handed St Bernadette Catholic Secondary School a Good rating after an inspection in November 2018. In their findings, the inspector wrote that ‘Pupils respect the religious ethos of the school. They feel a part of the community, regardless of their own faith. They respect and understand leaders’ expectations of them regarding British values.'

7. St Bernadette Catholic Secondary School - Good

Ofsted handed St Bernadette Catholic Secondary School a Good rating after an inspection in November 2018. In their findings, the inspector wrote that ‘Pupils respect the religious ethos of the school. They feel a part of the community, regardless of their own faith. They respect and understand leaders’ expectations of them regarding British values.'

Bristol Brunel was marked Good during an Ofsted visit in June 2013. A short follow up inspection was made in 2017 which determined it was still operating at a Good level. It stated: ‘Pupils are proud of their school and appreciate the positive impact the behaviour policy, ‘Right to Learn’, has on their progress.'
