I love the Bristolian accent, and how could you not? It is unrivalled in the UK - even if it doesn’t seem to land many serious roles on the tele and radio.
The accent can mangle words like no other which can cause a few problems with visitors from afar - and sometimes those who have lived in the city for a while.
We’ve thought of a few places in Bristol where we could not agree on the pronunciation. Let us know how you say these eight place names
1. ‘Artcliffe
Some people seem to pronounce this place with an H at the beginning?
2. Montpelier
Bristol and France - a match made in heaven, right? This trendy neighbourhood is shares its name (although spelt with one less L) with a spot in the south of France. It is a strange thing to hear a Bristolian strain out a French accent when pronouncing ‘mont-pell-ee-ay’. It’s ‘Mont-pelly-err’ according to most in Bristol.
3. Siston
Another small village, about 7 miles East of Bristol, Siston’s name looks unassuming. It isn’t ‘Sis-ton’ but pronounced ‘sizeton’.
4. Swineford
Located next to the popular village of Bitton, this hamlet often doesn’t get talked - and when it does, people don’t know how to pronounce it. ‘Swine’ like a pig? ‘Swine’ similar to vine?
