A new piece of research has revealed that Avon and Somerset Police logs one of the highest rates of shoplifting crimes in the UK.

The business insurance experts at Bionic contacted all 45 police forces in the UK to request 2023 shoplifting data, including the number of crimes logged, the months they occurred and the locations.

Avon and Somerset came in 8th for the police forces with the highest shoplifting rate with 8.5 shoplifting crimes per 1,000 people.

The shoplifting rate per 1000 people in the police area was 19 per cent higher than the national average of 7.1 crimes per 1000 people.

The location which logged the most shoplifting crimes was Bristol - 38 per cent of all shoplifting crimes in the police area were logged in Bristol (5,622 crimes).

The worst month for shoplifting was August (1426 crimes logged) while January was the month with the least logged crimes (992 crimes logged).

Here are the six unitary authorities within the Avon and Somerset area in order of the number of logged shoplifting crimes in 2023.

  • Bristol: 5,622
  • South Gloucestershire: 1,965
  • North Somerset: 1,347
  • Bath & Somerset: 1,331
  • South Somerset: 915
  • Sedgemoor: 777

Across the whole of the UK, the research found 433,042 shoplifting crimes were logged throughout 2023, marking a 26 per cent increase in cases compared to the previous year.

7.1 shoplifting crimes were logged per 1,000 people on average, up from 5.7 in 2022.
