Residents were urged to keep their doors and windows closed while ten fire engines from across Bristol battled the fire.

An investigation later carried out by Avon Fire and Rescue found that the fire was likely to be accidental.

Now South Gloucestershire Council, which operates the site, has issued an update telling residents that the site will be closed today (Wednesday, May 18) and tomorrow (May 19) so that officers can survey the damage.

A spokesperson for the authority said: “We’ll update information about reopening the site once we know the results.

“Our recycling collection vehicles will continue to unload at the site, as the area they use is on the other side of the yard and safe to access.

“The recycling centres at Yate, Thornbury and Little Stoke are all open, but are likely to be busier and there are restrictions in place at the smaller site in Little Stoke.”
