They claim they have seen the ‘weird’ incident take place in central Bristol, near St Philip's Footbridge which links to Temple Island.

Taking to Reddit, one social media user wrote: “Recently we've seen a strange small boat (with 'Innovation' on the side) dumping brown liquid via a large pump/pipe thing in the river and then moving on.

“Basically looks like it's done a giant dump in the river. Guy operating it was wearing a high viz jacket, so.. you know.. must be legit.”

In response, another user has replied with what appears to be an explanation about what is really going on .

They’ve shared a local notice to mariners from Bristol City Council’s website, which suggests it is a dredging operation.

“Dredging operations will be carried out in the City Docks from 13 October 2023 until further notice,” the notice reads.

“This work will be carried out by the water injection dredger “Innovation” and will display signals as prescribed in the International Regulations for the Prevention of Collision at Sea (1972 as amended) Rule 27 section (b) and (d) as appropriate.

“'Innovation' will start at Netham Drain (entrance to Netham Lock) and progress westerly through the City Docks.”

Dredging is a way to remove sediment, silt, and other debris from the bottom of a body of water.
