The 16-year-old’s father arrived and the axe was seized without an arrest being made, police say.

The youth, who was not known to police, said he had found the weapon.

An Avon & Somerset Police spokesperson said: “We understand people are concerned after sightings of a young man with an axe in Tanorth Road.

“We attended and found the boy, aged 16, nearby.

“He said he had found the axe, called his father about it and was waiting to be collected. His father arrived and the matter was dealt with.

“The boy had not come to police notice before and as there was no evidence of any further offences, such as threatening behaviour, he was given strong words of advice and the axe was seized.

“We're grateful to the member of the public for calling us.”
