Police and ambulance crews were called to the incident at the Church Road junction with Chalks Road and Blackswarth Road in Redfield at 7.40am.

Both the vehicle driver and the pedestrian have been taken to hospital.

An air ambulance was called and landed in the area, but ultimately was not needed as the two patients were taken to Southmead Hospital and Bristol Royal Infirmary by land ambulances.

On Church Road, the lane heading away from Bristol to the junction is closed, while Chalks Road is currently closed in both directions.

First bus is diverting its 43/44/45/46 services from Church Road currently.

Last month, BristolWorld reported on calls for an urgent rethink at the junction, with people describing it as dangerous due to amount of vehicles and slow pedestrian crossing.

As part of a consultation for a so-called ‘liveable neighbourhood’ in east Bristol, people suggested ideas to make it safer, including allowing pedestrians to cross the middle of it, rather than round its perimeter. Another idea is to replace it with a roundabout and zebra corssings.

On this morning’s incident, a spokesperson for the South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (SWASFT) said: “We were called at 07.31hrs to a road traffic collision in the Redfield area.

“We sent a hazardous area response team, an operations officer, an air ambulance and two double-crewed land ambulances. We conveyed one patient to Southmead Hospital and one patient to Bristol Royal Infirmary, both by land ambulance”.

An Avon and Somerset Police spokesperson said: “We were called at 7.40am today (Wednesday 22 June) to Chalks Road, in St George, following a collision between a vehicle and a pedestrian. The driver and pedestrian have been taken to hospital.

“The road has been closed outbound on Church Road to the junction with Chalks Road, one-lane remains open on the inbound.”
