A taproom dubbed the smallest in Bristol has doubled in size as part of ‘big plans’ for the coming year.

Basement Beer, an independent microbrewery in Stokes Croft, has expanded its seating from 25 to 50 people.

The site on Upper York Street, formerly occupied by Croft Ales, was opened by owner and head brewer Ben Evans in 2019.

The space has been able to expand after Lost Horizon Coffee, who previously shared the premises, left for pastures new at the end of 2023.

The expansion has opened a ‘world of possibilities’ for events, with Basement Beer now hosting a monthly quiz night, comedy night and live music.

It also hosts ‘Brews and Illustrations’ where artists are encouraged to come down and mingle, create art and display their work.

Evans said: “Starting a brewery just before lockdown has been a real challenge but we have been embraced by Bristol and its beer-drinking locals.

“Since expanding the taproom we have been able to put on some amazing events that showcase the incredible music, comedy and artistic talents of Bristol and can’t wait to continue being a little cultural corner, serving great beer made on site!”

Basement Beer has managed to find a niche with locals looking for easy-drinking beers and something a little bit different.

Their Strawberry Lemonade and Cobana Cooler Iced Tea Sours, a collab with Bird and Blend Teas are popular as well as the Coffee Stout.

Basement also makes a range of Pale Ales, IPAs and lagers as well as stocking other breweries from around the UK.

It has paired up with Stokes Croft restaurant The Spaghetti Incident to offer customers fresh pizza at the touch of a button.

Drinkers will be able to order food to pick up a few metres down the road through an app or via the Basement website and there are plans to add to the available restaurants very soon.

The taproom is open between Wednesday and Saturday and is available to hire for small parties.
