The Met Office has issued a weather warning over a thunderstorm which is expected to hit Bristol over the coming days. The yellow-level alert will remain in place from 2pm on Saturday (June 10) until 9pm the same day.

It comes after a week of glorious sunshine and balmy weather in the city, with temperatures soaring over 25C and set to rise even further next week. But while many places will be “largely dry” on Saturday afternoon, “thunderstorms with heavy rain and hail are likely to develop in some places” in the south west of England.

The Met Office warned there was a small chance that some homes and businesses could be flooded during the storm, with damage to buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds. Spray and sudden flooding could also lead to difficult driving conditions and road closures.

“Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and possibly even cancellations to rail services,” the warning on the Met Office website reads. “There is a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be temporarily lost.”

Despite the thunderstorm, temperatures will remain warm - as high as 26C on Saturday and 24C on Sunday. Next week temperatures are set to soar “well above average” and it could even feel “uncomfortable and humid” for some residents.

“Turning rather humid, perhaps feeling uncomfortable overnight.”

Met Office long-range forecast for Bristol

“With a change of type taking place over the preceding weekend, the week is likely to start on a fairly cloudy but widely warm note, in places hot and humid, with a risk of scattered showers and thunderstorms. As the week progresses, this risk is likely to diminish, with the focus of these and the warmer weather also probably moving westwards with cooler, drier conditions resuming across eastern areas.

“By the end of the period, similar conditions to the present are most probable, with west and north-western areas seeing the best of the sunshine and warmth, whilst eastern areas are likely to be a bit cooler.

“Showers and thunderstorms may return to southern areas. Temperatures are expected to be well above average for most, feeling particularly warm overnight.”
