Bristol has been ranked among the top three cities in the UK for gamers in a study by the Independent Advisor Broadband.

E-sports popularity has been exponentially growing throughout the UK. It’s predicted to have 22.8 million users by 2028 and can be incredibly lucrative, with top players winning over £1 million.

The Independent Advisor Broadband have created the Gamer Skill Index ahead of the Counter-Strike Blast Premier Spring Final on June 12 at London.

The Gamer Skill Index looked at various factors including gaming jobs, tech innovation and the median download speed to determine the best cities in the UK for gamers.

Top 3 UK cities for gamers

Experts crowned Bristol as the second best city for gamers with a total gaming score of 7.44 out of 10. Bristol had the second-highest median download speed on the list (125.0 Mbit/s), an impressive 99.55% 4G coverage, 108 annual searches for hacks and cheats per 100,000 people and 109,992 annual searches for top ten games per 100,000 people. The city also has 10 gaming jobs per 100,000 people, 5.2 gaming company HQs per 100,000 people and a tech innovation index score of 2.7.

Ranked in first place was Manchester with a gaming score of 8.12 out of 10, a median download speed of 79.7 Mbit/s and a 4G coverage of 99.91%. The city also had 117 annual searches for hacks and cheats per 100,000 people, 117,939 annual searches for top ten games per 100,000 people, 14 gaming jobs per 100,000 people, 7 gaming company HQs per 100,000 people and a tech innovation index score of 4.9.

Edinburgh ranked third with a gaming score of 6.32 and the highest tech innovation index score among the top three cities (6.3), a median download speed of 125.0 Mbit/s and a 93.24% 4G coverage. The city also had 93 annual searches for hacks and cheats per 100,000 people, 58,327 annual searches for top ten games per 100,000 people, 10 gaming jobs per 100,000 people and 4.4 gaming company HQs per 100,000 people.

Most popular video games in 2024

The study also revealed the most popular videogames in the UK.

Fortnite was crowned the overall winner with a popularity score of 9.63, a Discord server size of 1,053,976 and 5,871,000 UK searches. The game also had 59,832 Twitch viewers on average, 47,308,874 Instagram posts and 60,200,000 TikTok posts.

In second place was Roblox with a popularity score of 8.66, a Discord server size of 1,024,622and 26,240,000 UK searches. The game also had 4,225 Twitch viewers on average, 7,895,899 Instagram posts and 65,200,000 TikTok posts.

Minecraft ranked third with a popularity score of 8.22, a Discord server size of 1,354,378 and 4,744,000 UK searches. The game also had 25,281 Twitch viewers on average, 19,874,636 Instagram posts and 21,400,000 TikTok posts.
