The fundraiser reads: “After our government has decided to take the fuel allowance away from our elderly and needy, we have decided to try and help in a small way.

“The funds will be used to purchase hot water bottles, bedding, etc.

“We run a local pub and we see first hand how much of a struggle it is for everyone but more so our elderly who have contributed more so than anyone else.”

The fundraiser comes after the Labour Party was accused of punishing pensioners after MPs voted to cut the allowance for millions across the country yesterday (September 10).

The government insisted the proposed changes are needed to fill a £22 billion “black hole” in public finances left behind by previous Conservative governments.

In Bristol, Green MP Carla Denyer was the only MP to vote for blocking the cut, with the four other Labour MPs - Damien Egan, Darren Jones, Kerry McCarthy and Karin Smyth - voting against.
