Ten historic Bristol buildings at risk
Could some of these buildings be salvaged?
There is no shortage of breathtaking architecture scattered across Bristol with many of the buildings having stood the test of time for decades.
Others haven’t been so lucky though, whether it be through vandalism, general wear and tear or even the result of bomb damage from the Second World War. The city has plenty of historic structures stood rotting away.
Some of these have plans to be renovated such as the Grosvenor Hotel which was gutted even further by a fire in October 2022. Some properties are still waiting to either be rescued or pulled down and put out of their misery. Here are 10 heritage sites currently at risk in Bristol.

The fire-damaged former Grosvenor Hotel will be pulled down after Bristol City Council approved plans for the demolition of the sorry site.

6. 59 Kingsley Hall, Old Market Street
Built 1706 and restored late C19. Early Georgian style and the only Bristol example of a style of urban architecture more common in other south-west towns, such as Butterwalks of Totnes and Dartmouth. Brick-clad timber frame with limestone dressings. Ground floor set back beneath overhanging upper storeys, supported on columns. Roofs and external fabric in vulnerable condition.

7. Church of St Mary the Virgin, Church Close
This 13th Century church has 19th Century restorations and an interesting array of tombs and monuments, some listed in their own right. Roof coverings and rainwater goods are all in poor condition and there is vegetation growing out of the eroding masonry. Areas of mortar erosion and cement render are in need of replacement. This building has been subject to heritage crime.

St Mary le Port is a ruined parish church in the centre of Bristol, England, situated in Castle Park on what remains of Mary le Port Street
