A B&M store has issued an apology to its customers after confirming it will close before the end of the month.

Broadwalk Shopping Centre announced last month that the discount store would close in ‘early April’ - but has brought this date forward. B&M was one of the largest retailers still operating inside the 50-year-old shopping precinct which has become run-down in recent years.

In a short statement, the retailer confirmed it would close the Knowle store before the end of the month. It read: “Unfortunately, your B&M Bristol - Knowle store at Broadwalk Shopping Centre will close on Wednesday 29 March.

“We’d like to apologise for any inconvenience caused as a result of this closure.”

The closure also comes amidst redevelopment plans put forward by the Redcatch Development Partnership for the centre. The plans would see the current 1970s structure demolished and replaced with around 800 flats based in several tower blocks, a cinema, small supermarket, restaurant, library and dentist surgery. A planning decision was due to be made tomorrow - but has been delayed to a date yet to be fixed.

Also closing is M W Freshfoods, which has traded at the shopping centre for 23 years. Owner Will Appleby blamed the rising cost of produce and a decline in footfall at the run-down centre. Other stores to close in recent years are BrightHouse and Wilko.

The nearest B&M store to Knowle is at Imperial Park in Hartcliffe.
