Blaise Castle Estate: Medieval village created for major new TV drama The Winter King

Parts of the Blaise Castle Estate in Henbury have been cordoned off as the location for a major new TV drama.

The Cardiff-based BadWolf production company has fenced off an area of the estate to film its adaptation of Bernard Cornwall’s The Winter King.

Parts of Blaise have been transformed into a bustling village for The Arthurian Legend drama.

Signs have been put up on security fences around the site close to the 18th-century mansion house and folly at Blaise.

They explain how there is a temporary closure of the public right of way along the side of the Folly and say ‘we acknowledge this is a public space and wish to keep our time here as minimal as we can.”

Depending on weather and filming schedules, the production company plans to be off site by Christmas.

Earlier this year, BadWolf built a temporary film set with a fortified encampment in a yard at a Patchway industrial estate.

The Cardiff-based firm already has TV hits such as BBC’s His Dark Materials and Sky’s A Discovery of Witches under its belt and hopes to complete filming of the new ten-part series, inspired by the first book in Cornwall’s The Warlord Chronicles, by January 2023.

The show follows the story of Arthur Pendragon who, according to legend, led the defence of Britain against Saxon invaders in the late 5th and 6th centuries.

Kate Brooke (A Discovery Of Witches, Bancroft) and Ed Whitmore (Manhunt, Rillington Place) have adapted Bernard Cornwell’s Warlord Chronicles for the series and Otto Bathurst (His Dark Materials, Halo) is the lead director.
