With so much to see and do in Bristol, many people visiting our city will not think to go looking at villages on the outskirts - but they will be missing out.
From Compton Dando to Pilning, the area around Bristol is filled with quaint villages served by walking and cycle routes, and usually a good local pub.
We’ve compiled a list of our favourite villages in the region, and surrounding areas, that you should visit this year.
1. Pensford - 22 minutes away
Of course, the prominent feature of this Somerset village is the viaduct which once took trains on the Bristol and North Somerset Railway until closure in 1959 - but there is much more. Take a seat in one of the best pub gardens in the UK at the Rising Sun and enjoy a pint overlooking the River Chew. Then take a stroll through the narrow High Street which is almosts traffic free. | cpphotoimages - stock.adobe.com
2. Kelston - 30 minutes away
A small, delightful village on the road between Bristol and Bath offering plenty to do. Whether it be a walk up Kelston Round Hill, believed to be an ancient burrow, or tasting cheese at Bath Soft Cheese Company or having a drink at the charming Old Crown Inn, you won’t be stuck for ideas. Even driving through, you can’t miss the lines of hanging baskets which make this such a pretty village. | Google Maps
3. Compton Dando - 25mins away
Take the windy Chewton Road from Keynsham and you’ll arrive in the small village of Compton Dando by the River Chew which is also on the Monarch’s Way footpath. Join the ramblers for a drink at The Compton and take a look at the Grade II-listed St Mary Church, built in 1735. | Google Maps
4. Swineford - 26 minutes away
Located next to the popular village of Bitton, this hamlet often doesn’t get talked about but is well worth a visit. Firstly, you have The Swan pub which lines the Bath Road. Then, there is a picnic area off the busy road with a path leading up the hill to Upton Cheyney. Nearby is the River Avon with the Swineford Lock constructed between 1724 and 1727. | Google Maps
