OK, it might not quite be up there with Manchester or Liverpool but Bristol has a long and proud history when it comes to great music.
The biggest names to emerge from the city are still the 1990s triumvirate of Massive Attack, Portishead and Tricky, all of whom are credited for their contribution to the so-called ‘Bristol Sound’, whatever that is.
In recent years, former Bristol students Idles have become one of the city’s hottest exports, their explosive and often outrageous live shows making them firm festival favourites.

1. Roni Size
Mercury Prize-winning DJ and producer Roni Size was thrown out of his Bristol school at the age of 16 but went on to become one of the most successful drum and bass artists
2. Tricky
Originally from Knowle West, Tricky was originally part of Wild Bunch and Massive Attack before launching a successful solo career both sides of the Atlantic
3. Blue Aeroplanes
Fronted by enigmatic singer and poet Gerard Langley, art-rockers The Blue Aeroplanes formed in the early 1980s and are still going strong, with their 12th album due out in April
4. Portishead
Beth Gibbons, Geoff Barrow and Adrian Utley formed Portishead in 1991 and have released three award-winning studio albums in 32 years
