15 pictures from the annual Apple Day in the Bristol suburb of Sea Mills

Visitors could enjoy a selection of homemade produce, arts and crafts stalls and live music

A Bristol community got together over the weekend to celebrate its annual Apple Day.

Large crowds of people, some of whom had travelled as far as Wales, visited the event near Cafe on the Square in Sea Mills.

Visitors could enjoy a selection of homemade produce, arts and crafts stalls and live music on the sunny green by the cafe.

New to this year’s event was the tombola, the cakes being sold outside and special guest Shannon Smith, an orchard learning coordinator at Horfield Organic Community Orchard who helped identify visitors’ apple species.

She said: “Generally people are bringing apples from older trees that are in their gardens and usually those are cooking apples that have been planted. So I’ve definitely seen some Bramley apples and some Newton Wonder. I’ve just identified a Jupiter, which is actually not a cooking apple and was first raised in the 1970s. So that's probably from a tree that’s about 40 or 50 years old.”

Maggie Morris, one of the organisers, explained why apples were chosen for the event: “Sea Mills was built as a garden suburb for returning soldiers from the First World War and their families.

“Every household was given a fruit tree - plum, apple or pear - and 100 years later some of them are still surviving.

“People were saying they didn’t know what to do with all these apples so I thought it would be a great idea to bring along an apple presser, get people to come along and press their apples.

“And so we now have this big theme of apples and all the cakes on the stall are apple-related, too.”
