From hardware shops and pet stores to tailors and barbers, Bristol is well known for its independent shops and businesses.
Many of them are family-run and have been open for decades, some now run by grandchildren of the original owners.

1. Vince’s, 76 Bedminster Parade, Bedminster
Sicilian barber Vince Bellavia has been cutting hair in this shop since 1980 but he had a smaller premises along the street for ten years prior to that. Now 78, Vince works alongside his sons these days.
2. Wild Oats Natural Foods, 9-11 Lower Redland Road, Redland
Mike and Loes Abrahams opened Wild Oats in 1981 and it’s still the city’s top choice when it comes to healthy wholefoods.
3. Wood Family Butchers, 24 High Street, Shirehampton
Paul Wood is only the fourth owner of this Shirehampton butchers shop in more than 200 years. There has been a butchers here since 1805 when it even had its own slaughterhouse.
4. Marcruss Stores, 177-181 Hotwell Road, Hotwells
Family-run Marcruss Stores has been a Hotwell Road landmark for more than 60 years, selling camping/ski wear, workwear and wet weather clothing/boots, as well as army surplus and Airsoft guns and accessories.
