The Royal Inn at Portishead reopens with a new look on Monday

After a six-figure investment by owners the Chef & Brewer Collection, Portishead landmark The Royal Inn reopens on Monday after several months of closure.

A popular Portishead pub and hotel overlooking the Bristol Channel, The Royal Inn has celebrated its grand reopening with a historic time capsule burial in its new grounds.

The pub team, along with members of the local community, including the RNLI which is based nearby, came together to witness the landmark moment in time for the popular seaside pub, which officially reopens on Monday (July 24).

Handwritten letters to the future pub landlord, from both the former owners, Demetrios Pelengaris and Frances Pelengaris and current General Manager, as well as a picture of the pub team, the day’s newspapers, and a sealed bottle of ale were just some of the momentoes included in the time capsule to be discovered in years to come.

The nostalgic container was buried at the foot of a tree as the centre piece for the pub’s garden terrace, overlooking the waterfront, with a commemorative plaque fitted to capture the historical moment.

Kaman Miller, General Manager of The Royal Inn, said: “The Royal Inn is key part of Portishead’s history and we wanted to do something extra special for the reopening, that those who have been coming to the pub for many years can feel a part of.

“Having the local community involved in the time capsule has been brilliant and I’m so excited to be part of the pub’s next chapter and to see what the future holds!”

Inside, the restaurant has been significantly expanded, giving guests the option of stunning sea views whilst they dine. The bar area has increased in size, with a more open plan space, perfect for families and guests with furry friends in a welcoming, dog friendly setting.

Externally, the pub’s garden terrace has been completely revamped. Now with two tiers, it makes for the perfect al fresco dining spot.

New additions include an outdoor bar on the decking with an external fire place, and capacity for 250 guests.

The pub will launch with its summer menu, including favourites such as British chicken and ham hock pie and hand battered Atlantic cod. Guests can also enjoy a delicious breakfast/brunch offering, as well as a weekly seasonal specials board.

As part of the refurbishment, all 10 hotel rooms have been fitted with new furniture and bathrooms, offering people a luxurious overnight stay at a reasonable price.

General Manager Kaman said: “We’re so pleased that we’ve managed to give our pub a modern makeover, whilst still in-keeping with its traditional features from its original build in 1830.

“Being located so close to the marina makes us the perfect summer spot to grab a bite to eat or have a drink, especially in the summer months. We can’t wait to welcome guests through our doors and show them what we have to offer.”
