Situated to the south of the beautiful village of Uphill, the popular Uphill Hill Local Nature Reserve is a lovely 17-hectare site owned by North Somerset Council.
The serene nature reserve is designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and forms part of the Mendip Limestone Grasslands Special Area of Conservation, (SAC) supporting a diverse flora and valuable insect habitat.
In spring, a gorgeous display of cowslips, primroses and green-winged orchids covers the northern and eastern hill slopes.
The site is also home to multiple archaeological features, including a disused lime kiln from the 19th century, a sheep wash and a powder house.
Livestock also graze on some of the enclosed areas of the nature reserve from April to November.
The climb up the hill is absolutely worth it to enjoy the dazzling views overlooking Weston-super-Mare and the Bristol Channel.
The hill is also home to a beautiful 16th-century stone watch tower and St Nicholas' Church, an old Norman church dating from around 1080 AD and consists of a tower, chancel and roofless nave.
Uphill Hill Local Nature Reserve has a small free parking area near the entrance and by The Boathouse, a dog-friendly café just a short walk away.

16. Powder House
The structure is a 19th century powder house used to store the explosives which were used to blast the stone out of the quarry behind the Uphill marina, where stone was obtained to burn in the quarry limekiln, and for use in building. | BristolWorld
