Although many of us are cutting back in 2022, October half term still looms and you’ll no doubt be looking for ways to keep the kids entertained.

Luckily, Bristol is such a vibrant city ever brimming with things to do - and a lot of them don’t cost an arm and a leg.

From an autumnal walk through a country park, to crafts at the Cathedral or a bristling boat ride, you’re sure to find something to tire out even the most energetic young ‘un.

Here’s a round-up of things to do in Bristol this October half-term.

Explore the outdoors at Bristol parks including Ashton Court Estate

Bristol has some incredible parks to enjoy, and many of them don’t cost a penny to visit, including the Ashton Court Estate. The historic park is just 10 minutes’ drive from the city centre and features 850 acres of woodland and grassland - not to mention a stunning mansion, two deer parks, foot golf, disc golf and even a miniature railway.

Find out more on the Bristol City Council website.

Indoor events for rainy days this October half-term

The M Shed’s Think Global: Act Bristol exhibition explores big environmental questions affecting the city, and could inspire your children to become the changemakers of the future. Meanwhile, the Clifton Suspension Bridge is running History Handling Sessions in their brand new Clifton hub throughout October, which are free to attend but must be booked in advance through the website.

If you’re feeling creative, on Wednesday, October 26 you can visit Bristol Cathedral for free Crafty Cathedral events, or learn about African textiles and have fun making your own at Bristol Museum and Art Gallery. The Royal Photographic Society is also hosting some fun family activities including a Stop Motion Animation and Paper Light Drawing Workshop and a family film screening on 24 and 30 October.

Take a boat trip around Bristol harbour

There’s no better place to see Bristol than from the water thanks to the city’s historic harbour. If you’re looking to find your sea legs, you can take a tour with Bristol Packet Boat Trips, spotting iconic landmarks along the way, or hop on a Bristol Ferry with stops at SS Great Britain, Underfall Yard and Spike Island.

The Matthew, a reconstruction of the original Matthew that John Cabot sailed to Newfoundland in 1497, is free to visit - it’s moored up alongside the M Shed during the winter months and there is usually a dedicated crew on board who will tell you all about the ship’s history.

Enjoy autumnal activities from a funghi discovery trail to tractor rides

Attractions across the city are offering a whole host of things to do this October half-term.

Longleat Safari Park will also be running a host of activities including pumpkin carving, sand art, mini ride-on tractors, craft events, owl flying and a pumpkin trail.

Or put your senses to the test at Slimbridge Wetland Centre during the site’s Eek! Week Events. Are you brave enough to put your hand in a snake box, grab a photo op with a bat or get up close and personal with a toad?
