After the success of its first site in Cotham Hill, a Thai tapas restaurant has opened at a new location in Bristol.

Mangosteen’s second location is a welcome addition between two estate agents on North Street in Bedminster, near the Tobacco Factory.

It is a cool and comfortable restaurant, with a pink fluorescent sign shining above where we sat.

With a menu of small plates, curry, seafood and noodles and rice, we went for a mix to get the most out of our visit.

We were told by the waitress that the food comes out quickly, and we were shocked when our dishes came out a mere five minutes after ordering them.

But the speed did not affect the quality of the food, which is full of fantastic South-East-Asian flavours.

We had a Thai duck red curry (£11) with jasmine rice (£4), and the curry had chunky pineapple pieces in it, making for a delicious change.

For the sea food, we had golden prawn bags (£7), which were garlic and herb-marinated shrimp and prawn in filo pastry, served with a delightful sweet chilli sauce relish.

And we also had chicken spring rolls (£7), with the chicken cooked just as well as the duck and sea food.

While eating the food, I noticed that the manager was sitting at each individual table to get customers’ feedback on their visit while they paid their bill.

Our turn came and we could be nothing but complimentary of our visit. We also found out that there are up to nine chefs in the kitchen, which is how the food is cooked so fast!

The only thing that was potentially missing for us was a dessert menu, but this could very well be added in the future.

Thai cuisine done well seems to be something missing in Bristol, and Mangosteen is certainly challenging that with its fresh and varied dishes.
