With roadworks finishing ahead of schedule on Sandy Park Road, traders in Brislington are hoping for a boost in footfall.

One standout business worth visiting is The Pukka Peacock, an Indian restaurant that opened in the former Sandy Park Butchers at the end of August.

Although the restaurant has space for just 20 diners, it made a huge impression during our recent visit.

Run by Dhayalan Paul and Saritha Thomas, it offers both a friendly atmosphere and top-notch food.

We were warmly greeted by Dhayalan from the open kitchen. The professional chef has worked around the globe, and that is reflected in the quality of the menu, which changes monthly.

During our visit, it featured a festive selection, beautifully complemented by charming Christmas decorations and classic festive songs playing in the background.

Unlike other Indian restaurants I’ve visited, this menu is limited and offers specific chicken, fish, and lamb dishes, which makes it feel more curated.

Standard soft drink brands are not available; instead, there's the Indian-inspired beverage Bodha. I opted for the chilli lemonade (£3.95), which had a definite chilli taste without being overwhelming.

Food-wise, I chose the ‘Nilagiri’ chicken stir fry (£8.50) for a starter, unsure of what to expect. The chicken was tender and tasty, served alongside a smooth and lovely coconut yogurt sauce.

For my main course, I ordered the South Indian seafood hotpot (£19) to compare the quality of the fish to the chicken. The dish, featuring prawns, mussels, and red mullet, was fresh and generously portioned. Accompanied by beans poriyal and fluffy steamed rice, I also ordered a side of naan (£2), which was perfect for soaking up the delicious sauce.

To finish, I had the ginger toffee pudding (£8), served with caramel sauce and chocolate mousse. It was a filling and heartwarming dish to round off the meal.

Overall, my visit to The Pukka Peacock was cozy and delightful. Dhayalan’s personal touch on the menu truly distinguishes this restaurant from any other Indian restaurant I’ve experienced.

I would certainly return in a month or so to see what new dishes Dhayalan has created.

The Pukka Peacock is open from 5–10pm Wednesday to Saturday, and 11am–3pm for Sunday brunch. Diners are advised to book in advance.
