Bombil: I ate at the new Indian restaurant in Bristol and it was the best Indian food I’ve eaten all year

Bedminster in Bristol has always been lacking in places to eat after 5pm, so Bombil is a real welcome addition.

The restaurant, from the same team behind other popular Indians Nutmeg, Nadu, Kal Dosa, has opened on Bedminster Parade, in what was previously short-lived jazz venue Bessell Scotts.

I visited Bombil just as it opened on a weekday at 5pm, and was the first booking of the evening.

Upon entry from the unassuming outside, you are greeted with a beautiful interior of greenery, lights and murals.

The menu is not too expansive, with small plates, large plates and curries to choose from, alongside accompaniments and sharing platters.

Wanting to have a broad taste of the Bombay cuisine, my plus one and I went for the non-veg sharing platter for £24.

After a short wait, the plate of chilli garlic prawns, sticky pork ribs, masala chicken wings and bombil fish fry was plopped on our table.

Bombil’s tagline is "From Bombay to Bristol", and that was certainly the experience I had tucking into the platter.

Each one of the four items had a strong and fresh flavour, with all four equally as tasty.

All the dishes have a spicy kick to them, with my nose running just a tad for the chicken wings.

Being able to experience the new flavours was a real treat, and for just £12 each really affordable.

For dessert, I went for the chocolate delice and vanilla ice cream (£6), which was refreshing and a cool-down after the spicy chicken.

For too long it’s felt Bedminster is somewhere that largely goes quiet after 5pm, so it’s great to have Bombil there.

It calls itself ‘Bristol's newest culinary destination’ and I would say it is, with it being the best Indian restaurant I’ve eaten at all year due to the unique flavours of Bombay cuisine.
