‘Hidden gem’ is a term too often used in the media. At Bristol World, we overuse the term as much as anyone when describing an family attraction, restaurant or even bar we’re keen to share with you all.

So before I start this review, please forgive me for my use of the term, especially for a tiny burger joint. But on this occasion I insist on the cliched term because this was the most unexpected find I’ve ever made in Bristol.

No, it wasn’t an architectual delight, or a rare species of bird - but believe me, it was pretty damn good. The place? Dream Burger in Brislington. And it is so tucked away at the bottom of Church Hill, you won’t see it unless you know it is there.

It opened just over a month ago, and it was while seeking a fast-food fix after playing a game of football that I discovered it. KFC was my destination, but I’m glad I did a quick ‘burger’ search in Google to find it.

I first spotted the five-star rating from 15 reviews before two comments sealed the deal. Elliot Hill wrote: “Had the blue cheese burger, one of the best I’ve had in Bristol, ever”. And Josh Hughes wrote: “Hands down the best burger in the South West.”

Having first driven past it I turned around and parked up behind Miss Millies where I saw a couple of delivery bikers parked up outside the lit-up bar. Walking inside I was greeted with a smile and passed the menu.

The menu had a mix of ‘gourmet beef patty burgers from American Cheese (£7.35) to Italian Burger (£7.65) to French Blue Cheese Burger (£8.95). There were also ‘smash burgers’ like Mozzarella-Bacon Smash burger (£7.65), chips (£2.80) and homemade milkshakes (£4.50) and lemonades (£4).

There were also meal deals, which I went for. £10.35 for a cheese burger, chips and an Oreo milkshake. I also picked up an Italian burger out of curiousty. Ten minutes later, they were done and packed and I was on my way back home to try it.

The first thing I noticed on trying the burgers was the beef patty. They weren’t oily and tasteless. They were juicy and full of flavour. With the cheese burger it was joined with gooey slices of American cheese along with a good dollop of ketchup and mayo inside a fesh brioche bun. I must say, it was delicious.

The Italian was even better. The beef patty was joined with mozzarella, mushrooms, caramalised onions. But the best bit was the parmesan mayo which brought it all together beautifully - and it feels strange writing beautifully about what some may consider a ‘dirty burger’, but it was.

The chips were freshly cooked and the milkshake, topped with whipped cream, was a nice way to wash it all down - and then the best bit was I felt good afterwards. No post-KFC-style hangover here.

The food was so good that less than 24 hours later, on finishing a long car journey back from Birmingham, I was back there again for more. Dream Burgers is undoubtedly a great addition to the list of burger joints in our city.
