On its website, Thali says it is ‘unconventional, makeshift and unexpected’ - and it’s this unique approach that also makes it one of the best Indian restaurants in Bristol.

Located on St Mark’s Road in Easton, I visited Thali on a recent weekday evening to see the place for myself.

With pink walls, green plants and warm lighting, the restaurant was a welcome escape from the cold and wet outside.

There was also a good range of customers inside, from a lone worker, to a family, friends and couple.

Looking at the menu, I saw you could order a traditional thali, served with saag aloo, dal, basmati rice, yoghurt and pickled red onion for £13.50.

Or, you can get a bowl for the even more affordable option of just £6.50.

I went for a bowl of the keralan nandan chicken - chicken curry in a coconut, tomato sauce, curry leaves and a hint of green cardamom.

Adding in some sides, I went for the aloo paratha (£4.50) - homemade flatbread stuffed with spicy potatoes served with lime pickle and yoghurt.

I also had the masala fried potatoes (£4) - fried spiced potatoes coated in chickpea batter served with tomato and tamarind chutney.

And finally, the basmati rice.

To start, the curry was absolutely delicious, with a strong coconut flavour and a generous amount of tender chicken.

It’s served in a metal bowl and comes on a tray, which is handy for mixing it with the sides.

The masala fried potatoes were so crispy and spicy, and I just couldn’t stop soaking up my curry sauce with them.

The rice was also fluffy while the flatbread, though not a strong, distinctive flavour, was just fine.

The main and three sides only came to £18.50 altogether, which I couldn’t get over as this is such a good price considering how much I got.

Thali started as a street food truck at Glastonbury Festival, and with a unique interpretation of Indian food, it’s no surprise that it is now one of the best Indian restaurants in Bristol.
