A popular pub in Bristol has started serving a South African delicacy for a limited time.

I went to try the bunny chow - a hollowed-out loaf of white bread filled with curry - at The Pipe & Slippers on Gloucester Road.

It’s the signature dish of Slaps, the Durban street food pop-up that the pub is hosting until Saturday, March 22.

The bunny chow (£10) comes with a choice of three fillings: chicken (£2.50), lamb (£5), and butter bean and potato.

I went for the chicken, which was tasty and and spicy, but I felt it would have benefited from a less dry texture for the bread to soak up.

The meal is served with the the inside of the bread, which I initially mistook for rice, and some salad.

There’s also an option of sides, including dal (£6.50) and basmati rice (£3.50).

The bunny chow is an unusual but delicious meal, but you do you have to be a fan of bread to appreciate it in its all glory. My dining partner left some of their loaf, finding it just a bit too much.

If you’re not a fan of the bread, there is a choice of three other bases to have with the curry. These are roti, a type of flatbread (£8); basmati rice (£8); and slap tjips, a type of chips (£8).

Perhaps the best thing about the new pop-up is that a curry order also comes with a free Lost & Grounded pint on a Monday and Tuesday.

With the Slaps pop-up only running for one more week, it’s definitely worth trying out this unique curry dish and taking advantage of the free pint offer.

After Slaps, the next pop-up Yak Shack will bring Nepalese street food to Pipe & Slippers until Saturday, April 5.
