Felton Common: I visited a nature reserve perfect for plane enthusiasts - you can see planes take off nearby

We visited a local nature reserve perfect for plane enthusiasts- you can see planes taking off nearby.

Located in Felton, BS40 9YL, Felton Common is a unique 100 acres local nature reserve, site of nature conservation and designed open access land owned by Winford Parish Council.

The area is home to a number of important archaeological features and is almost exclusively used for recreation.

Felton Common was originally used as grazing land for local people and, until the end of the 20th century, this function helped control the vegetation and maintain the natural, open character of the common.

As grazing gradually declined over the years, there has been a change to the ecology of Felton Common, with scrub, bracken and trees invading the area, and at the same time, recreational use, especially dog walking, has increased.

The landscape changes dramatically over the season with thousands of bluebells adorning the open space in spring and wildflowers during the summer.

Bristol Airport is also next to Felton Common and visitors will be able to hear the rumble of planes landing and taking off, as well as see the occasional plane flying right over your head. It’s the perfect picnic spot for a plane enthusiast.

There is a small car par at St Katherine’s Church (BS40 9UR)
