Here is everything you need to know about the huge DIY SOS: The Big Build episode featuring a Bristol location.

What is DIY SOS: The Big Build?

DIY SOS: The Big Build is one of the most popular BBC television shows which showcases a team of tradespeople working together to transform homes for people and families throughout the UK.

Fronted by renowned presenter Nick Knowles - who is also a chartered musician - the programme is known to warm the hearts of viewers because of how the 59-year-old collaborates with his friends, family and many volunteers to give back to those deserving of support.

The projects undertaken throughout this show are often grand in scale.

After its first episode debuted in October 1999, DIY SOS has gone on to become one of the longest-running BBC television programmes, with 240 episodes filling out 31 different series over the course of the last 23-years

What Bristol location is featured and where is it?

The Ranch: Southmead Adventure Playground

Touring a range of different locations throughout the country, Nick Knowles and his team have already visited and supported individuals and families in Corby, Barnstaple, Bangor, Weston-super-Mare, Carbis Bay and Scunthorpe.

Next on the list of visits is the South West city of Bristol, but which location is being developed in the city?

The DIY SOS team decided to renovate one of the five Bristolian Adventure Playgrounds: The Ranch.

Situated in Southmead, The Ranch has a rich yet unusual background and can be found on Doncaster Road (BS10 5PP).

Filming for this episode started when Nick Knowsles and his team landed at the Southmead Adventure Playground in October 2021, working on transforming the location over a nine day timeframe.

Why was The Ranch picked?

As previously noted, The Ranch has quite the peculiar yet traumatic background.

In the past, the Southmead Adventure Playground location has already been burnt down and rebuilt on two separate occasions.

Though that is not the only setback suffered by The Ranch, with the council cutting funds in 2013 and was at risk of closure in 2018.

In what was a rather brave step, the location was taken on by the Southmead Development Trust to lease it and run a ‘skeleton service’ in an attempt to reestablish The Ranch within the local community.

However, the decision was made to close the park as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic that has plagued the world over the last two years.

But luckily after it was picked up once again in 2021, The Ranch was chosen by the DIY SOS team for development as a replacement for a planned story which fell through.

What has been said about The Ranch?

Talking after the redevelopments have been made to the site, Our Youth and Play Manager Will Dorney has spoken about how the transformation has breathed new life into the centre:

“The quality of the facilities here now are exactly what our children and young people deserve,” he said in a statement.

“Since relocating our local youth club here (The Ranch) we have noticed a huge leap in young people spending time with us”

Pete de Boer, who is a Senior Practitioner for Youth and Community at Bristol City Council is hopeful for a better relationship in the future:

“We are very proud of working in partnership with the Southmead Development Trust at The Ranch,” he said.

“Sites like these are integral in supporting young children, as well as keeping them out of harm’s way.

“The Ranch is an essential resource in Southmead and we really look forward to continued partnership working for the years to come”.
