More than 400 new Covid cases recorded in Bristol in past 24 hours - and one death

The number of coronavirus cases in Bristol increased by 448 in the last 24 hours, official figures show – and one more death was recorded.

A total of 81,648 people had been confirmed as testing positive for Covid-19 in Bristol when the UK coronavirus daily dashboard was updated on December 15 (Wednesday), up from 81,200 on Tuesday.

They came on the day the UK recorded 78,610 daily cases - the highest since the beginning of the pandemic.

The rate of infection in Bristol now stands at 17,526 cases per 100,000 people, higher than the England average of 16,523.

Across the UK, the number of recorded cases increased by 77,741 over the period, to 11,010,286.

There was also one more coronavirus death recorded in the latest 24-hour period in Bristol.

The dashboard shows 592 people had died in the area by December 15 (Wednesday) – up from 591 on Tuesday.

Last week it was revealed that there were a number of cases which tested positive for the Omicron variant in the city.

The city’s director for public health, Christina Grey, has urged people to take lateral flow tests before meeting friends and family, or going outside for activities such as Christmas shopping.

In a rush to get protection against the rise in cases, people have been queuing up at walk-in vaccination sites across the city.

The figures also show that more than two-thirds of people in Bristol have received two doses of a Covid-19 vaccine.

The latest figures show 320,342 people had received both jabs by December 14 (Tuesday) – 70% of those aged 12 and over, based on the number of people on the National Immunisation Management Service database.

Across England, 81% of people aged 12 and above had received a second dose of the jab.
