Sixth form makes up the last two years of a young person’s secondary schooling, and for many students will be preparing to sit their A Level exams. How they perform can have a ripple effect on which university or tertiary institutions they can attend, and as such, their future career prospects after graduation.
We’ve compiled the best-performing fees-free state secondary schools and sixth form colleges in Bristol based on A Level results based on the most recent performance data currently available (from the 2022/23 school year).
We used the schools’ A-level performance point scores - a scaled score based on the average number of points students managed to achieve across all A Level exams they took - to create the rankings.
The number of points are based on the challenge and size of the qualification, and a maximum of 60 points are available for a grade A* at A-Level.
All schools on the list had an overall Ofsted rating of ‘good’ or ‘outstanding’ before this measure was dropped in September, meaning the quality of education provided, student behaviour and attitudes, school leadership and management, and student safeguarding have all been found to either meet or exceed government standards.
