Tell us your stories as we Go The Extra Mile fundraising for disability
A team of 12 amateur golfers will be coming to Bristol as they attempt to play 18 rounds of golf across 5 countries in just 6 days this June, all with the ambitious aim of raising £80,000 to purchase 3 new Paragolfer all-terrain wheelchairs which help wheelchair users or people with mobility rise up and play golf. Along the way the team will be stopping at The Players Golf Club where we hope to meet some local heroes who champion disability or have a great story about how golf has made their life better.
‘Going The Extra Mile’ builds on the success of Project 24, which raised enough money to purchase 2 Paragolfers which are in use at Walmley Golf Club and Roehampton Club in England. The ambition is to place the 3 new machines in parts of the UK where there is currently no local access to these specialist vehicles, which enable people with disabilities to play golf. Demand for these machines has grown significantly in the past few years as awareness of the positive impact the Paragolfer can have on physical and mental health.
“We know how amazing golf is for people of all abilities,” comments Founder of The Golf Trust and participant in the Going The Extra Mile Challenge Cae Menai-Davis. “This challenge is going to be hard work, so we want people from Bristol to come and cheer us on, tell us your story, see the Paragolfer and get involved in the fundraising. Golf is a sport for everyone and we want to show the world that it can be played anywhere and by anyone.”
The team will set off from the home of The Golf Trust, The Shire London on June 16th. They will travel through Bristol on the same day, and finish their journey at the home of Golf, St Andrews 6 days later. Along the way, the team will play different types of golf courses highlighting the accessibility and affordability of golf. The local people and communities they meet along the way will be included on social media channels and in a documentary.
