Scout group numbers exceed 130

The 209th Bristol Scout Group now have over 130 children and young people in their Scout Group. The Group caters for children and young people aged from 4 to 14.

In 2018, the Scout Group had 7 Beavers (boys and girls aged 6 to 8), 7 Cubs (boys and girls aged 8 to 10) and 8 Scouts (boys and girls aged 10 to 14). They now have over 130 children and young people in the Group. In 2022 they opened a Squirrel Drey (boys and girls aged 4 to 6) and they now have 28 children in that section. They have 30 children in Beavers, 26 in Cubs and 48 in Scouts. They have recently opened a second Scout Troop to manage the number of young people moving up from Cubs and from the waiting list.

The reasons for the increase in numbers are due to excellent programmes that mean more young people are being retained within the Group and more adults volunteering to help with the sections. Some of the activities the Scouts have done include rafting, rifle shooting, camping, Bath Monopoly challenge, High ropes and earning badges.

Paul Baker, Lead Volunteer for the Group said, “Scouting gives young people the opportunity to do things they may not normally have a chance to do. They also learn from one another and develop friendships that will last.” He added, “Scouting provides over 250 activities. These include, making a fire and toasting a marshmallow, planning and going on a hike, holding reptiles or earning a badge for pioneering. With activities ranging from archery to craft, fire lighting to hiking and pioneering to water activities, there is something for everyone.” He added, “Young people will learn and develop skills for life such as teamwork, independence, resilience and leadership.”

Caleb said, “Being in 209th Lockleaze Scout Troop has helped me to do lots of fun activities. These include camping away from home, taking part in rifle and archery competitions and all the activities I’ve done at Woodhouse, like Jacob’s ladder and high ropes. I really like working towards the badges and feel proud when I achieve them. I was happy to be chosen to be a Patrol Leader and I enjoy that responsibility. I like being part of a club.”

Paul added, “We are looking for volunteers so we can open more sections and give more children and young people the opportunity to have fun, try new activities and make new friends. Whatever time you can give, we will find you a role. If you want to volunteer to help with any of the sections, it doesn’t have to be every week. If you want to help fund raise, we can find a role for you and if you want to do some admin, we can also find you a role.“

Paul said, “As volunteers we can help put the foundations in place. We then encourage the children and young people to build upon them as they try new activities and learn skills for life. Children and young people want adventure, and we provide the opportunity to have those adventures. Come and join us. Be a role model for children and young people in the Group, try new activities, pass on your skills and have fun.”
