Family travels thousands of miles to surprise centenarian Peggy

A delighted resident at a Keynsham care home was ‘over the moon’ when her relatives travelled all the way from Canada to see her on her 100th birthday.

Peggy Colemen of Meryton Place Care Home couldn’t believe it when her extended family arrived for her special day along with UK relatives, bringing together four generations of their family.

The group inspired a tremendous amount of excitement at the Bath Road home as Peggy’s party was extended over three days!

“I feel very spoilt with three days to celebrate my birthday, it was all very lovely.”

Mother of two Peggy said the secret to her healthy 100 years is down to keeping fit and having a good laugh.

She added: “Keep moving, eat sensibly, and laugh often!”

Peggy was born in London on August 3, 1924 and grew up in Wanstead, where she met her future husband Jim at Wanstead High School.

During the war, she trained at Guy’s Hospital and qualified as a State Registered Nurse. The couple were married in 1948 and went on to have two daughters.

Daughter Pam Harding said: “It’s been wonderful to see Mum celebrate her 100th birthday with all four generations of her family. It has been a very special occasion, something we will never forget.”

Entertainment over the three days included performances from Bristol-based singer Shannon Kitchen and brass musicians, The Bath Practice Band.

Shannon thrilled residents with her soulful tone as she sang Peggy’s favourite wartime songs, including ‘White Cliffs of Dover’ and ‘We’ll Meet Again.’

The band’s rendition of Happy Birthday proved a huge hit.
