Care home hands over £200 for community orchard

Former engineer David from Lovell Place Care Home, Sparrowbill Way, Patchway, joined the community orchard tree planting event at the Brook Way Activity Centre in Bradley Stoke.

Lovell Place has contributed £200 toward the orchard’s development and David was particularly keen to offer practical support too.

Long-time Patchway resident David has always loved gardening and is known for his green thumb. He was joined by the home’s Wellness and Leisure Lead, Vicky Green.

David, who is in his 80s, said: “It’s wonderful to be able to plant a tree that others will enjoy for years to come. I probably should have worn wellies, though - it’s very wet and muddy out here!”

Vicky added: “We’re so pleased to be part of this initiative. Caring for our environment and working towards a greener future is something we should all prioritise.”

Bradley Stoke Town Council Mayor Natalie Field also attended the event alongside many volunteers and local residents, to witness the planting of 40 fruit trees.

The initiative was organised as part of the local town council’s Local Nature Action Plan and aims to enhance green spaces and biodiversity.

And on the day, despite the wet and windy weather, community spirit was in full bloom.

Lovell Place customer relations manager Sarah Jacka said: “Events like these bring people together and strengthen our connections.

“We’re proud to support such an important project.”

Lovell Place residents and staff plan to visit the orchard area regularly to check on how the trees are growing.

The Bradley Stoke Local Nature Action Plan outlines steps to help reduce carbon emissions and enhance biodiversity in the area. It documents how initiatives like tree planting can make a difference.
