A popular Bristol eatery ranked top out of 275 places to grab a ‘quick bite’ on Trip Advisor has received with a 1-star food hygiene rating.

Middle Eastern grill Matina at St Nicholas Market in Bristol’s Old City, received the low score after a visit from inspectors on January 6.

It will no doubt come as a shock to fans of the street food vendor, which is renowned for its huge queues, authentic Kurdish wraps and ‘great value for money’.

But food safety officers from Bristol City Council found that while two of the three assessed areas,hygienic food handling’ and ‘cleanliness and condition of facilities’ were found to be ‘Good’, ‘management of food safety ’needed ‘Major Improvement’.

Management of food safety relates to systems or checks in place to ensure that food sold or served is safe to eat, there is evidence that staff know about food safety, and the inspectors have confidence that standards will be maintained in future.
