Developers have been given the go ahead to start work on a ‘brand new neighbourhood’ on land just off Cribbs Causeway.
A joint venture between Bellway and Taylor Wimpey will see the firms create 760 homes on a site accessed from the A4018 in Patchway.
Bellway’s part of the scheme is known as ‘Berwick Green’ and was approved by South Gloucestershire District Council in late April.
The development will feature a mix of 382 two-bedroom apartments and two, three and four-bedroom houses around nine miles from Bristol city centre with ‘excellent links’ to the M5 and Bristol Parkway station.
Tim Lund, sales director for Bellway South West, said: “This is a project which will create a brand new neighbourhood on the edge of Bristol and deliver a major investment in the area.
“As two large and experienced developers, we will be able to work expertly alongside each other to build the high quality housing that the area deserves.”
The proposals were rubber-stamped despite 14 formal objections from residents.
Main concerns raised related to increased traffic and pollution along with effects on local wildlife.
But Mr Lund said the development would improve the area and ‘create opportunities’ along with much-needed housing.
He added: “There’s an urgent need to address the shortfall in the UK’s housing supply, and demand is particularly high in Bristol, one of the country’s fastest growing and most desirable cities.
“Our partnership with Taylor Wimpey will enable us to meet this challenge by delivering hundreds of new homes in a key location.”
It is understood that a quarter of the homes (25%) will be classed as affordable.
Construction is set to start on site later this year.
