Review: Bristol Hippodrome's Tina Turner Musical is full of emotion, drama and just amazing music

The story of Tina Turner is one most people are probably aware of, even if they haven’t watched the musical.

But the 2-hour, 45-minute production now showing at Bristol Hippodrome is certainly an enjoyable way to experience it - full of emotion, drama and just amazing music.

Elle Ma-Kinga N’Zuzi (playing Tina) excels in the main role, embodying the mighty energy of the late star.

It’s clear from the production that Tina pushed and pushed to get to top, overcoming many obstacles along the way.

This emotional journey makes the story engaging and often heart-wrenching, from her mother abandoning her to the abuse she faced from Ike (played by David King-Yombo).

And the musical makes no attempt to downplay Tina’s struggles, with the abuse scenes between her and Ike difficult to watch at times.

It explores all the social issues faced by Tina, including racism, sexism and ageism - making it a very important show.

The story aside, the costumes are just as out there as Tina’s were, and accurately capture her evolution as an artist.

There’s also plenty of her songs featured, including all the favourites such as What’s Love Got To Do With It.

The way the musical is produced, it is interesting to see how issues Tina was experiencing in real-life influenced her music.

The lighting is also incredible, and I particularly like the addition of four disco balls in the auditorium - which felt like being transported to an actual Tina concert.

The mega-mix at the end featuring all of Tina’s greatest hits like Proud Mary is like it’s really her up there, and gets the whole audience on their feet.

The story has a predictable element to it, in the sense those watching will know Tina overcame her challenges to become the star she was.

But the relationships with those in her life, such as Ike and her mother Zelma (played by Letitia Hector), keep the story interesting.

The show has you rooting for Tina right from the beginning, and the conclusion feels fulfilling.

That, alongside all the incredible Tina Turner songs in it, makes it a must-watch for those who love brilliant music alongside an engaging story.
